January 21, 2008

Design of the month of January is my new "Broadway" ring. It is a little bigger than my usual rings. The stone (a blue topaz) is set upside down – a “designer” approach

Instead of the regular setting, I chose a unique and different way to set this stone. I decided to turn it – head down and legs up. I guess I was influenced by my mother’s “I am surprised you’re still standing on your legs and not on your head” that accompanied me through out my adolescence. The stone is surrounded by plethora of diamonds.

This ring makes a statement. I wore it a couple of times and it always turned out to be a conversation piece.

A  new year is up and around and so are we at Chezla.

I started the new year with making new designs. Soon you will be able to see my new gold jewelry. Some of the present jewelry will retire and move to Florida. It will be replaced with the new designs.

I want to wish all of you a happy new year.

Keep watching the site. The new pieces are coming soon!!!

December was a very busy month. We started with a successful show at the JCC in Manhattan.  Next, Chezla was invited  to join a designers show in Chelsea and we ended with the grandiose Couture show at the Pratt Mansion on Fifth Avenue.

It was hard work but it all paid off. the shows were great. The locations were amazing and most important I got to meet a lot of new artists. The nicest people in the universe.

Look below to see a picture from the party at the Couture show. You can see me partying and if you look again you might identify a lot of other famous jewelry artists.

I have been spending a lot of time in the studio lately. I make some new designs which I hope you’ll like. I still keep the simplicity in each piece. I made some new neckpieces and some new rings. One ring is called “Fertility Goddess”. I still need to buy the diamonds that are going to each piece and set them. When it’s all done I will take photo’s and I hope to add it to my website.

Diamonds
Diamonds have been appreciated since 400 BC when they were first discovered in India. Up to the 18th Century, they were very rare and could be found only in Borneo and Hindustan.

In the beginning of the 18th Century, Brazilian miners, while searching for gold, found some curious pebbles, which they took back to their masters. Considered worthless, the pebbles were given to the children to play with and were forgotten. Luckily, the pebbles caught the experienced eye of an officer who previously spent a few years in India. He decided to send a handful to a friend in Lisbon. The pebbles were examined in Amsterdam (then, the European center for precious stones) and proved the real thing.

Diamonds are referred to as the essence of purity, the symbol of royalty and the token of an ever-lasting love. The recent resurgence of the engagement tradition in the Western World has brought back the popularity of the diamond.

This is some information about the origin of diamonds. I hope in the future to tell you more about how diamonds are graded and how to take care of your diamond jewelry.

What makes me create new designs?

Frankly, it is the energy of the city. New York with it’s hoards of people rushing from place to place, the restaurants and bars flowing out onto the sidewalks, the stores on Madison Ave, the scene in the village, SoHo and the lower east side. The whole city is buzzing with activity.

When I watch my city, I feel all that energy channeled into my heart, my brain and the tips of my fingers and it transforms in to a new jewelry design or the beginning of a painting.

Today I felt like making something completely different. A piece to recall spring. I took molding wax and created a bunny. It looked adorable and silly at the same time. I decided to make a charm out of it and a ring. I cast my bunny in silver and gave it red garnet eyes.

Some days you just have fun going in a different direction and exploring other materials. Now I walk around with a little silver bunny on my finger and everyone who sees it falls in love.

Here are some pictures of my bunny.

Let me know what you think of it. You can contact me through the link above.   I would love to hear from all of you.
